Halloween parties, candy hangovers and unexpected blizzards couldn't stop Puss in Boots in its tracks. TheShrek spinoff, starring Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, scored a Halloween weekend record with an estimated $34 million in ticket sales, stomping all over the $33.6 million Saw III pulled in back in 2006. The weekend's other two wide releases, In Time and The Rum Diary, didn't fare as well. The Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller flopped in at third place with $12 million, while Johnny Depp's Rum Diary, one of his rare roles that doesn't involve animation or a wacky costume, arrived DOA at $5 million. Depp might need to hit the bottle to take the sting out of that one.Holiday-appropriate Paranormal Activity 3 proved people can't get too much of a good scare by landing at No. 2, with $18.5 million in box office sales. Next week: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas kicks off the holiday movie season, and Eddie Murphy(finally!) makes his foul-mouthed, live-action, big-screen comeback in Tower Heist.
